BMX Bandits-Bee Stings
作者:admin 日期:2009-06-08
The BMX Bandits are a good example of why John Peel was such a singular institution.
A DJ who could foster and support bands over a longer span than most music careers last is probably now a thing of the past, but even three years after his death, the first thing that pops into your head when seeing a new album by a band like the BMX Bandits is “ah, Peel favourites”.
The fact that they’re fifteen albums into their career is fairly impressive in itself, having outlasted most of the better-known bands that spawned from their members over the years. With a new co-writer and female vocalist, Duglas Stewart has some new avenues to explore, but ultimately they still play gentle indie with nice harmonies and a fondness for keyboard string arrangements.
Now, however, they can play with girl/boy parts, shown most intriguingly on the Will Oldham song, ‘After I Made Love To You’. The downside is that Bee Stings errs perilously close to Radio 2 slickness at times.
BMX Bandits Biography
Formed in Bellshill, Lanarkshire, Scotland, in 1985, this idiosyncratic band revolves around Duglas Stewart (ex-Faith Healers and Pretty Flowers). Stewart chose the name "BMX Bandits" because he assumed the band would last for one gig, but it quickly became one of the prime components of the "anorak" or "C86" movement. However, despite an early, naïve image - Stewart sometimes passed sweets out to his audience - the singer has proved himself a wry lyricist, akin to idol Jonathan Richman.
The band's debut single, "Sad"/"E102", was issued on 53rd & 3rd in 1986. Sean Dickson (keyboards), Jim McCulloch (guitar), Billy Wood (vocals) and Willie McArdle (drums) joined Stewart for this release, although within months, the first of a host of line-up changes was underway. Dickson formed the Soup Dragons, which McCulloch later joined, and the Bandits were buoyed by the arrival of Joe McAlinden (vocals/guitar/saxophone) and Norman Blake (guitar/vocals, ex-Faith Healers). Both musicians were involved in another band, the Boy Hairdressers, but were part of the reshaped line-up featured on C-86, mischievously dubbed so by Stewart when his band was denied a spot on the compilation tape of that name. Gordon Keen (guitar) and Francis MacDonald (drums) completed the "new" BMX Bandits, which was aurally moving away from its early, jejune sound.
Eugene Kelly (ex-Vaselines) joined the quintet for Star Wars, issued by a label based in Japan where the BMX Bandits enjoyed a cult following. It showed the band's increased musical maturity, although individual commitments to other projects defied convention. Blake found success with Teenage Fanclub, McAlinden had formed Superstar while Kelly and Keen forged Captain America, later known as Eugenius. The BMX Bandits joined Creation Records in 1993, but attendant publicity announced that the last-named pair would no longer feature in the band. Life Goes On was another excellent set, boosted by the inclusion of the memorable "Serious Drugs".
The BMX Bandits supported southern soul singer-songwriter Dan Penn on a rare live appearance prior to completing 1995's Gettin' Dirty. By this point a new line-up of Stewart, Francis MacDonald, Finlay MacDonald, John Hogarty and Sushil K. Dade (ex-Soup Dragons) had emerged. "It's the first time the BMX Bandits have been a group, rather than friends backing me", Stewart opined. The results were their finest album to date. Theme Park was an equally strong follow-up, but following its release the band fragmented into solo projects. A slimmed-down version of the band, featuring Stewart, Francis MacDonald and guitarist Gabriel Telerman, recorded a new BMX Bandits album, Down At The Hop, in 2003.
